Justin Fargas' Promising Season Comes to an End

Looking for an RB to get you through the last weeks of the playoffs. Look no further that Dominic Rhodes of the Oakland Raiders. Rhodes, last years Super Bowl hero for the Indianapolis Colts, is still fresh from not having played much this year and should be a good fill in play for the Raiders rushing attack.

Top 3 Fantasy Football Playoff Strategies

The fantasy football playoffs are much like the major league baseball playoffs, a crapshoot. Any team that makes the playoffs can win the playoffs. However, with a little strategy, you can give your team a bit of an edge going into the last 3 weeks of the regular season. Here are my top 3 fantasy football playoff tips.

  1. Know your division winners - Whether your league finishes in week 16 or 17, it is important to know which teams have clinched their playoff spot and thus have nothing else to play for. There are a few teams clinching early this year, (New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers). Don't be surprised in big names like TO and Brady see reduced playing time in the final weeks.
  2. Watch the waiver wire like a hawk - Every year a few big names emerge in the last 3 weeks of the season. Teams out of contention will give increased playing time to young players and teams that have clinched are more likely to play backups. If you can score one of these players, it may win you a playoff game.
  3. Play the matchups - If the regular season is about staying the course, the playoffs are about scoring big and scoring now. Go with the best players each week that have the best chance to score big. Matchups can play a key role in the playoffs. Your star player in the regular season may not be the best start in the playoffs.

There it is. Good luck and enjoy the last few weeks of the season.

Steven Jackson is Officially Inactive for Week 4

This was expected, but it still hurts to hear it. Steven Jackson, Rams RB, is officially inactive for week 4. Brian Leonard will get the start. If you haven't already grabbed him off the waiver wire, now is the time.

Fantasy Football Week 4 Injuries

Before you sign off on your lineup check these week 4 injury updates.

  • Javon Walker (Broncos, WR) did not practice this week and will most likely sit out the game against the Colts.
  • Brandon Jackson (Packers, RB) will not play against the Vikings this week. Vernand Morency could see action for the first time this year. Hard to start a GB RB this week.
  • Larry Johnson (Chiefs, RB) has a hammy issue and may not be 100%.
  • Brian Westbrook (Eagles, RB) has an abdomen issue and is listed as questionable.
  • Ahman Green (Texans, RB) is questionable and unlikely to play.
  • Rudi Johnson (Bengas, RB) is questionable with a strained hammy but Marvin Lewis is confident that he will be available Monday night.
  • Laurence Maroney (Patriots, RB) has a groin injury and is listed as questionable.
  • Plaxico Burress (Giants, WR) is listed as questionable with an ankle injury.
  • Hines Ward (Steelers, WR) has been ruled out for week 4.
  • Jake Delhomme (Panthers, QB) missed practice on Friday and may not be able to start. David Carr would get the start, but this could also affect Steve Smith's production.
  • Vernon Davis (49ers, TE) is likely to miss 2 weeks with a knee injury.

Deuce McAllister is Out for the Season

Sorry Deuce owners. The Deuce party that began last year for the New Orleans Saints has come to an end. Unfortunately, Deuce tore a knee ligament in the game against the Tennessee Titans on Monday night. This is the second season ending knee injury of his career.

We'll see if this leads to an increased workload for second year running back Reggie Bush.

2007 Fantasy Football - The Year of the Wide Receiver

While elite running backs continue to disappoint this fantasy football season through week 3, wide receivers are scoring like its a video game.

Owners of Steven Jackson, Ladainain Thompson, and Larry Johnson have seen only one 100 yard + rushing performance this year. Not a great return on investment.

Meanwhile, WR's are lighting it up. Randy Moss and Chad Johnson have over 800 yards and 8 touchdowns between them in 2 games. Plaxico Burress and TJ Houshmandzadeh have 9 TDs between them. Steve Smith already has 4 touchdowns.

Will these high scoring wide receivers keep it up for 16 games? Probably not. But for now, if you own one of these guys, sit back and enjoy the scoring.

Andre Johnson's run as Elite Receiver Takes a Hit

Andre Johnson has always been a good wide receiver. But so far this year he has been approaching elite category. In 2 games this year he has 14 receptions for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, Johnson sprained his knee in last weeks game and will most likely not play this week against the Colts. This is a big blow for Johnson owners who may be without his services for as long as a month.

Jacoby Jones will start in Johnson's place and could be a decent play this week for fantasy football owners hurting at wide receiver.

Time to Panic - LaDainian Tomlinson and Steven Jackson Lay Another Egg

LaDainian Tomlinson and Steven Jackson were the consensus #1 and #2 picks in this year's fantasy football draft. Thus far, there are not living up to their lofty draft status.

Now, its early in the season....to early to write a verdict on these two. Both players have performed consistently well for multiple years (particularly LT).

But so far, it doesn't look like these two will come close to matching last years performances. Thus far LT has been held to only 68 yards rushing in two games. He has scored fantasy points only because of his versatility. The San Diego offense has looked completely out of sync.

On the bright side, they have faced two tough defenses in weeks 1 and 2 (Chicago and New England). Next weeks game against the Packers, who also have a pretty good defense, will be LT's chance to show that this won't be a down year for him.

Steven Jackson suffered the loss of Orlando Pace in game one and the Rams are now winless through 2 games. He has only 118 yards combined through week 2 and has yet to score a touchdown.

Its a long season, but those first 2 picks have some catching up to do if they want to pay off for their fantasy football owners.

Top 10 Sure Thing FF Running Back Projections for Week 2

There are some pretty good matchups this week at the running back position. Here are the top 10 sure-thing starters.

  1. LaDainian Tomlinson @ NE - LT has bad blood for the Patriots and will run hard.
  2. Joseph Addai @ Ten - The Titans have improved, but Addai will get his points.
  3. Shaun Alexander @ Ari - Has the Cardinals D really improved that much. We'll find out.
  4. Frank Gore @ Stl - Slow start last week....Gore should easily penetrate the Rams D-line.
  5. Steven Jackson vs. SF - We'll see how much the loss of Pace hurts this team.
  6. Willie Parker vs. Buf - Henry put up 100 in week 1....so will Willie.
  7. Travis Henry vs. Oak - These teams still hate each other, but look for Henry to play well.
  8. Brian Westbrook vs. Wash - The Eagles offense looked out of sync in week 1.
  9. Rudi Johnson @ Clev - Had 145 yards and 2 TDs vs. the Browns in week 2 last year.
  10. Adrian Peterson @ Det - Week 1 was no fluke. Peterson has already arrived.

Offensive Lineman Take a Big Hit in First Week

Both Jonathan Ogden and Orlando Pace suffered potentially season-ending injuries in week 1. This could have a significant effect on running backs Steven Jackson and Willis McGahee. Orlando Pace is out for the season and Jonathan Ogden is out indefinitely.

Steven Jackson and Willis McGahee both struggled in week 1 after losing the two dominant OL stars. It make take some time for the two teams to adjust to these losses. I would certainly continue to start Steven Jackson on a weekly basis, but McGahee may become a week to week decision based on matchups.

Fantasy Football Week 2 Projections - QB

Here are the top fantasy football week 2 starters at quarterback.

  1. Peyton Manning @ Tennessee Titans - No reason he shouldn't continue to light it up against this team.
  2. Carson Palmer @ Cleveland Browns - Palmer looked pretty good against a tough Ravens defense. He should look great against the Browns.
  3. Tom Brady vs. San Diego Chargers - This will be a test, but the Patriots offense looks loaded and should still put up points against a good Chargers defense.
  4. Tony Romo @ Miami Dolphins - The Cowboys are now one of the leagues best offenses and will score against Miami.
  5. Drew Brees @ Tampa Bay Bucs - Brees will come out more aggressive this week against Tampa Bay.
  6. Donovan McNabb vs. Washington Redskins - McNabb had a poor showing at Green Bay. Look for him to light it up at home against a division rival.

JaMarcus Russell Signs - Daunte Culpepper may Start Week 2

Josh McCown had a nice start for the Raiders in week one. But McCown reportedly slightly cracked his index finger on the final play of Sundays game. As a result, Daunte Culpepper may start for the Raiders in week 2.

Unless you are completely desperate at the quarterback position, I would bench Culpepper for week 2 until he has a chance to prove himself. However, the Raiders offense did show some signs of life, which may be encouraging for later on in the season.

In a side note, JaMarcus Russell did finally sign a contract. But don't expect him to receive much playing time, if any, this season.

Steven Jackson Owners Could be in Trouble?

I heard different reports so far on the condition of Orlando Pace, who was injured in the St. Louis Rams game on Sunday. FoxSports is reporting that Pace could miss the season, while Rams coach Scott Linehan said that the initial diagnosis is a shoulder sprain. ESPNews is reporting a shoulder dislocation.

Any of these scenarios probably mean that Pace will miss some significant time. If this is true, its a huge blow to the Rams offense and their trio of stud fantasy football players -- Steven Jackson, Marc Bulger, and Torry Holt.

The Rams looked pretty good until Pace went out Sunday. They will still produce, but I'm sure that the loss of Pace will reduce their total fantasy numbers. The most affected player will probably be Steven Jackson, the consensus #2 overall pick in this years fantasy draft. Without Pace, he could be reduced from great to good.

Big Fantasy Football Scores from Week 1

The first Sunday of football had some big fantasy football scoring. Some of the surprising performances included a pretty good day from Josh McCown and Ronald Curry and a breakout performance from Adrian Peterson. Also, Randy Moss scored better than anyone could have expected in his first game with the New England Patriots. He could end up being the steal of this year's draft if he continues his success. Here are some of the highlights.

Quarterback

  1. Tony Romo - 15 of 24 for 345 yards and 4 TDs, 1 Int - 1 Rushing TD

  4. Laveranues Coles - 7 rec. for 59 yards and 2 TDs
  5. Terrell Owens - 3 rec. for 87 yards and 2 TDs

Fantasy Football 2007 Week 1 Injury Roundup

Here are a few of the significant injuries from Sundays action that may affect your week 2 starters.

  • Eli Manning - Injured his right shoulder in the 4th quarter and did not return.
  • Brandon Jacobs - Sprained knee in the 1st quarter and did not return. This could be a big injury for fantasy football owners who drafted Jacobs in round 2 of their fantasy draft.
  • Orlando Pace - This could be a big one for St. Louis. The Rams didn't look the same after he left the game. He'll have an MRI on his shoulder on Monday.
  • Chester Taylor - A hip injury will clear the way for Adrian Peterson to start. Peterson had a over 100 yards rushing and caught a 60 yard TD pass in his first game.
  • Cadillac Williams - Left the game early with bruised ribs.
  • Kevin Everett - This one doesn't have fantasy implications, but its worth keeping an eye on. Everett took a big hit while making a tackle on a kickoff. He will have emergency surgery tonight for a cervical spine injury. This is always the toughest news to hear.

Should You Start Bengals Players vs. the Ravens in Week 1

Every time one of your fantasy football players goes up against the best defenses in the league there is a temptation to bench 'em. While this is understandable, it is not always your best option.

This Monday night, the Bengals go against the Baltimore Ravens. This affects a number of the top fantasy football players in the league due to the Bengals explosive offense. Here are some key stats for the top Bengals players against the Ravens.

  • Carson Palmer - 91.5 QB rating, 10 touchdowns 7 interceptions in 6 games.
  • Rudi Johnson - 52.7 yards a game, 4 TDs in 9 games.
  • Chad Johnson - 61 receptions...76.8 yards per game...6 TDs in 12 games.
  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh - 55 receptions...87.1 yards per game...5 TDs in 4 games.
Based on these stats, it seems very safe to play Palmer and TJ on Monday. The only players that warrant hesitation are CJ and Rudi Johnson. However, there numbers, although below par, are not terrible. If you have a deep bench at RB, you may have someone that can replace Rudi Johnson this week. But it is unlikely that you will have a backup WR that is any more of a sure thing than CJ. (CJ had 8 catches for 91 yards in the Bengals last game against the Ravens....a respectable performance.........Rudi had 78 yards and a TD in the first game against the Ravens last year).

Bottom line: Play the Bengals players this week. It may not be their highest scoring fantasy football week of the year, but they are all elite players and should still put up acceptable numbers. Unless you have a really deep bench, you are not likely to have any better options on your team.

Are the Colts Fantasy Football's Sleeper Defense in 2007

Somebody in my league has already picked up the Indianapolis Colts defense off the waiver wire. It may be a shrewd move. The Colts, like the Chicago Bears, play a swarming defense that aims to create turnovers. Against the New Orleans Saints, the best offense in the NFL last year, the Colts defense allowed only 4 points and had 1 sack, 2 interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown.

Its very early in the season and this could be a fluke, but the Colts defense performed this way in the NFL playoffs last year and they look like they have carried that momentum into 2007. If you have room on your bench or you are carrying a mediocre defense, you may want to give the Colts a look. More than likely they are still available in your league.

Hot Waiver Wire Fantasy Football Pickup - Patrick Crayton

Espn is reporting that Terry Glenn will miss the entire season after reinjuring his right knee. If this is true, then this makes Patrick Crayton this years first red-hot waiver wire pickup.

If you are looking to boost your fantasy football bench at wide receiver, or even add a quality WR2, then Crayton is a necessary pickup. Glenn posted 70 catches for over 1000 yards and 6 touchdowns last year for the Dallas Cowboys. If this story is true and Crayton takes over Glenn's position opposite TO, then Crayton could be in store for similar production this year.

Week 1 Fantasy Football Sleepers

Here are my top week 1 fantasy football sleeper picks.

  • Donte Stallworth (Patriots vs. Jets) - With Randy Moss not yet at full speed, look for Stallworth to get a lot of looks.
  • Ladell Betts (Redskins vs. Dolphins) - Portis will play, but Betts will get carries.
  • Brandon Jackson (Packers vs. Eagles) - Not sure if Jackson is still a sleeper, but he has a chance to prove himself in this game.
  • Matt Schaub - (Texans vs. Chiefs) - Schaub takes over the Texans offense and should play well.
  • DeShaun Foster - (Panthers vs. Rams) - The Rams can be run on, and Foster can be really good when he is on.

Colts Light it Up - Shut Down Saints in Fantasy Football Week 1 Opener

This was supposed to be a 2 team shootout, but the Colts did all of the shooting on the NFL Thursday night opener. Here are some of the highlights from the Colts fantasy football starters.

  • Peyton Manning - 18 of 30 for 288 yards and 3 TDs
  • Reggie Wayne - 7 receptions for 115 yards and 2 TDs
  • Marvin Harrison - 4 catches for 83 yards and a touchdown
  • Joseph Addai - 117 yards rushing for 1 TD, 3 receptions for 25 yards
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints high-powered offense was shut down by the revamped Colts defense. Here are the results.

  • Drew Brees - 28 of 41 for 192 yards and 2 interceptions
  • Reggie Bush - 38 yards rushing for no TDs, 4 catches for 6 yards
  • Deuce McAllister - 39 yards rushing for no TDs, 2 rec. for 7 yards
  • Eric Johnson - 8 receptions for 56 yards
A possible waiver wire pickup is the Indianapolis Colts defense. Its early in the season, but the Colts only allowed 4 points and had 2 int.'s, a fumble recovery and 1 touchdown. Pretty good start to the year. If you watched the game, the Colts D looked fast and hungry. If Bob Sanders stays healthy all season, this could be a fantasy defense on the rise.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Starters: Wide Receiver

Here are the top 5 ff WR starters for the first week of the fantasy football season. Start these WR's with confidence.

  1. Marvin Harrison vs. New Orleans Saints - I've been saying all week, this will be a shootout.
  2. Reggie Wayne vs. New Orleans Saints - There is plenty to go around in this game.
  3. Steve Smith @ St. Louis Rams - The Rams are still not known for their defense.
  4. Larry Fitzgerald @ San Francisco 49ers - Fitz is poised for a comeback year.
  5. Marques Colston @ Indianapolis Colts - The Saints will be forced to pass a lot in this game.

Ronnie Brown is Officially Named the Starting RB for the Dolphins

Cam Cameron has officially named Ronnie Brown the starting running back for the Miami Dolphins, after sending mixed signals that Jesse Chatman could steal carries. At this point, it should be safe to start Ronnie Brown as your 2RB on Sunday. The Dolphins play the Washington Redskins in their season opener.

Opening Kickoff for the NFL is Tonight - Set Your Rosters

The 2007 NFL season kicks off tonight with a great game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints. If you have any FF players starting in this game, make sure you play them tonight because this could be an offensive shootout. Here are the key fantasy football starters from each team.

Indianapolis Colts
  • Peyton Manning
  • Joseph Addai
  • Marvin Harrison
  • Reggie Wayne
New Orleans Saints
  • Drew Brees
  • Reggie Bush
  • Deuce McAllister
  • Marques Colston
Feel free to start any of these players with confidence tonight.

Week 1FF Midweek News Roundup

Here are some of the headlines that you need to know about for your week 1 fantasy football match-up.

  • ESPN news is reporting that Daunte Culpepper will start at QB for the Oakland Raiders in week 1.
  • Rams coach Scott Linehan says Torry Holt looks 100% to him - This is good news for those of you who ignored the news on Holt last week and drafted him anyway.
  • T.J. Duckett could steal snaps from Tatum Bell when Detroit plays Oakland Sunday....This may be a no-start week for Detroit running backs.
  • Randy Moss is not on the Patriots injury report and should start Sunday.

Don't Game your Fantasy Football Lineup

One of the biggest mistake that fantasy football players make each year is to try and game their lineup on a week to week basis. I equate this to trying to beat the stock market. You may get lucky with a couple of wins, but over the long haul, you will lose.

Gaming your lineup means that you bench a great player with a tough match-up in favor of an average player with a great match-up. Its very tempting to do, but over the course of a long fantasy football season, its too risky. Great players like LaDainian Tomlinson are a near-lock to get 20-25 touchdowns over the course of the season and its impossible to know in which game they will occur. Sometimes, a great fantasy football player's numbers will come in spikes or bunches. You are better off starting a great player every game regardless of the matchup rather than trying to guess when the spikes will occur.

This year, try and resist the urge to game your lineup. Stick with your big guns and ride them out through the entire season. You're likely to end up with a better record after its all said and done.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Projections: Quarterback

Here is my list of the top 5 ff quarterback starters for week 1. These guys should score well this week.

  1. Peyton Manning vs. New Orleans Saints - Last time Peyton played NO he put up 6 TDs.
  2. Drew Brees @ Indianapolis Colts - This one has the makings of a shootout.
  3. Donovan McNabb @ GB Packers - 2 passing TDs and 2 rush TDs against Pack last year.
  4. Tony Romo vs. New York Giants - Post-Parcels Cowboys could score more this year.
  5. Jon Kitna @ Oakland - Martz will unleash the passing game in week 1 with Kevin Jones out.

FF Week 1 Running Back Matchups vs. Last Year

Sometimes a player's past fantasy football performances against a team can predict future successes. Lets take a look at some week 1 RB FF matchups and see how they performed last year against the same team.

  • Steven Jackson vs Carolina - 7 rushes for 27 yards, 7 rec. for 30 yards, no TDs
  • Frank Gore vs. Arizona - 16 rushes for 87 yards, 6 rec. for 83 yards, 2 TDs
  • Shaun Alexander vs. Tampa Bay - 28 rushes for 92 yards, 1 rec. for 14 yards, 1 TD
  • Willie Parker vs. Cleveland - 16 rushes for 46 yards, 4 rec. for 17 yards, 2TDs 32 rushes for 223 yards, 1 TD
  • Laurence Maroney vs. NYJ - 16 rushes for 65 yards, 1 TD 12 rushes for 37 yards, 0 TDs
  • Rudi Johnson vs. Baltimore - 18 rushes for 78 yards, 1 rec. for 2 yards, 1 TD 16 rushes for 47 yards, 2 rec. for 17 yards, 0 TDs
  • Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Tennessee - 8 rushes for 56 yards, 2 rec. for 29 yards, 0 TDs 25 rushes for 98 yards, 3 rec. for 47 yards, 1 TD
Based on these stats alone, I would expect big games out of Willie Parker, Shaun Alexander, and Frank Gore.........with a solid performance from Maurice Jones-Drew. Temper your expectations for Laurence Maroney and Rudi Johnson.

But of course, this isn't the only factor that plays into this week's performances.

Best Week 1 Running Back Starters

The best week 1 fantasy football starting running backs are as follows:

  1. Larry Johnson @ Houston Texans - LJ will have a good first game against Houston.
  2. Frank Gore vs. Arizona Cardinals - 2 TDs last year in opener vs. Arizona.
  3. Joseph Addai vs. New Orleans Saints - Colts will move the ball all night long.
  4. Reggie Bush @ Indianapolis Colts - Colts will have a problem defending Reggie Bush.
  5. Edgerrin James @ San Francisco 49ers - Over 100 yards in last game vs. SF

Waiver Wire Bench Rider: Selvin Young

Apparently the Denver Broncos have already found their new no-name fantasy RB of the future. Selvin Young has reportedly taken over the #2 position at RB for the Denver Broncos behind Travis Henry after having an impressive preseason (167 yards on 34 carries).

If you have room on your bench to spare, you may want to consider picking up Selving Young and parking him there for a few weeks. Henry has always been prone to injury....and suspensions. If he goes out for a few games this year, Selvin Young could put up some fantasy football points at running back for the Broncos.

Fantasy Football 2007 Live Draft Results

I recently completed a live draft over Labor Day weekend and I've posted the results below. My team is T Daniel. I've removed the "real" names of the other teams in the league.

Overall I think it will be a competitive season. As usual, there were some early round surprises. Matt Hasselbeck went in the 3rd, probably 2 rounds too early. I also felt like team 1 jumped on Marion Barber a bit too soon. The top 6 quarterbacks lasted only 4 rounds. I felt lucky to still get Marc Bulger when I did.

There was a huge run on RB's early as expected. I had hoped that Travis Henry might fall to me, but he was the 1st pick of the second round. I decided to take 2 stud receivers and wait on RB until the 6th round (This is a reception league). It was a tough choice but I feel like I have a team with some big home-run hitters. I always feel that its best to go against the grain when drafting, otherwise your team will look like everyone else's and you will have a hard time finding a competitive advantage.

Here are the results.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Running Back Updates

Its time to start working on fantasy football lineups for week 1. Here are some running back updates to digest as you plan out your first matchup.

  • Portis completed a regular practice and will "take the load" with Ladell Betts in week 1.
  • Kevin Jones was not placed on the PUP list and practiced Monday. He is now considered week to week.
  • Frank Gore practiced Monday and will wear a right hand pad in his first start.
  • Cecil Sapp is now listed as the #2 running back on the Denver Broncos depth chart.
  • Thomas Jones is reportedly ready to practice this week and should start week 1.
  • Brandon Jackson is expected to start for the Packers on Sunday.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Starter Report

The final week of the NFL preseason is decision time for many football teams. Starters are named and cuts are made. Here is a list of week 1 starters for fantasy football teams.

  • Byron Leftwich is out as the Jacksonville Jaguars QB and will be released or traded. David Garrard will start at quarterback.
  • Tatum Bell will start at running back for the Lions in week one in place of the injured Kevin Jones.
  • LenDale White is the likely week 1 starter for the Tennessee Titans and will share time with Chris Brown.
  • Bengals kicker Shayne Graham is confident of a week 1 start.
  • Charlie Frye will officially start week 1 at QB for the Cleveland Browns.
  • Daunte Culpepper is the "likely" week 1 starter for the Oakland Raiders.
  • Brandon Jones will "likely" start at WR for the Tennessee Titans.
  • Donald Driver is confident that he will be ready to start at WR in week 1 for the Green Bay Packers.

My Ideal Fantasy Football Draft

My main fantasy football draft is coming up this weekend and I typically like to plan out the first 5 or 6 rounds to specifically target players that I would like on my team. Obviously, the task of predicting players gets more difficult each round. Here is my current draft board of players that I will target this weekend. I have the 4th pick in a 10-team league.

Round 1

First Choice: Joseph Addai - Indianapolis Colts
Second Choice: Frank Gore - San Francisco 49ers

This is the easiest round to pick. At #4 I am virtually guaranteed to draft one of these players (If not, it means that someone has passed on LT or Steven Jackson......unlikely).

Round 2

First Choice: Maurice Jones-Drew - Jacksonville Jaguars
Second Choice: Brandon Jacobs - NY Giants
Third Choice: Marvin Harrison - Indianapolis Colts

Jones-Drew is an explosive back and should prove to be a solid #2 back. He may have some down games, but I feel confident enough to take a risk here. If drew is gone, I'll go with Jacobs who should score a lot of TD's for the NY Giants. If both guys are gone, Marvin Harrison is a sure-thing receiver who will provide consistent scoring.

Round 3

First Choice: Chad Johnson - Cincinnati Bengals
Second Choice: Torry Holt - St. Louis Rams
Third Choice: Thomas Jones - NY Jets
Fourth Choice: Cedric Benson - Chicago Bears
Third Choice: Carson Palmer - Cincinnati Bengals

Picking #4 should allow me to get a top tier receiver in the 3rd round. Chad Johnson would be my first choice here, followed by the slightly hobbled Torry Holt. If those guys are gone, I'd take a look at Carson Palmer if available....although I'd like to hold off until round 4 for QB. If I end up with Harrison in the 2nd round, then I would look at Cedric Benson or Thomas Jones to fill up my #2 RB spot.

Round 4

First Choice: Donovan McNabb - Philadelphia Eagles
Second Choice: Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints
Third Choice: Tom Brady - New England Patriots
Fourth Choice: Marc Bulger - St. Louis Rams
Fifth Choice: Marques Colston - New Orleans Saints
Sixth Choice: Anquan Boldin - Arizona

This is my target round for QB. If I wait any longer, I feel I'm taking too big of a risk. I've listed them in order of who I would like to take, although I'm not sure who will be available. If I happen to take Palmer early in round three, then I'll go with another WR here.

Round 5

First Choice: Jerious Norwood - Atlanta Falcons
Second Choice: Jamal Lewis - Cleveland Browns
Third Choice: Carnell Williams - Tampa Bay Bucs
Fourth Choice: Ahman Green - Houston Texans

Round 6

First Choice: Fred Taylor - Jacksonville Jaguars
Second Choice: Julius Jones - Dallas Cowboys
Third Choice: Ladell Betts - Washington Redskins
Fourth Choice: DeAngelo Williams - Carolina Panthers

In rounds 5 and 6 I typically like to stack up at running back. Its a high injury-prone position and in my opinion you can never have too many.

Round 7 and beyond become more hard to predict. I will most likely target a tight end in round 7 and then bulk up at WR in rounds 8 and 9. I'll save kicker and defense until the end of the draft.

2007 Fantasy Football Strength of Schedule

The strength of a teams schedule can have a huge effect on how a player performs throughout the fantasy football season. Even a great player can get shut down against the leagues best defenses. Here is an article from ESPN that has developed the following strength of schedule rankings based upon how many times a team plays the tougher defensive teams in the league.

ToughestAverageEasiest

Lions9Bengals2Titans-11

Packers7Browns2Jaguars-9

Redskins7Raiders2Buccaneers-8

Chargers5Bills1Panthers-7

Bears4Colts1Cardinals-6

Jets4Giants1Patriots-5

Cowboys3Seahawks1Falcons-5

Broncos3Eagles0Texans-4

Chiefs3Rams-1Ravens-3

Vikings3Dolphins-2Saints-3

Steelers3

49ers3

Looking at the easiest schedules, this ranking sheet bodes well for players like Deuce McAllister, Ahman Green, Laurence Maroney, Carnell Williams, and Edgerrin James.

On the side of the difficult schedules, you may have some down weeks with RB's like Brandon Jackson, Clinton Portis, and Cedric Benson.

Top 5 Fantasy Football Handcuffs at Running Back

A great handcuff running back can literally win you a season. I learned this a few years ago when I held Larry Johnson on my bench for a number of weeks while Priest Holmes started. Eventually, Priest Holmes went down with an injury (which I predicted) and LJ proceeded to go nuts the rest of the season.

If you are looking for a great fantasy football handcuff at running back this year, try these guys out. (I'm leaving out players who I feel are part of a 2-running back system).

  1. Michael Turner - San Diego Chargers (looks to be recovering nicely from ankle sprain)
  2. Leon Washington - NY Jets
  3. Mike Bell - Denver Broncos
  4. Correll Buckhalter - Philadelphia Eagles
  5. Ron Dayne - Houston Texans

ESPN's Eric Karabell lists 8 Tiers of Running Backs

If you are an ESPN Insider, you can read Eric Karabell's article outlining 8 tiers of fantasy football running backs. Many of the groupings make a lot of sense.......but here are some surprises.

  • Tier 1 consists of two running backs, LT and Steven Jackson.
  • Willie Parker is now a clear cut tier 2 running back.
  • Ronnie Brown leads of the tier 4 running backs.
  • Marion Barber and Julius Jones are both considered tier 5 running backs.
  • Some former tier 1 and 2 backs are now tier 5 - Ahman Green, Clinton Portis, Jamal Lewis, Fred Taylor.
  • The highly touted Maurice Jones-Drew is a tier 4 back.

Start Tatum Bell Week 1 against Oakland

New Detroit Lions RB Tatum Bell should see significant playing time week 1 when they visit the Oakland Raiders. RB Kevin Jones will start the season on the PUP list. However, watch for TJ Duckett to potentially steal carries around the goal line.

Oakland is not a great team, and Bell could post some solid numbers week 1. Bell may provide decent fantasy value on your bench for the first 5 weeks until Jones returns.

Safety First - Draft Rudi Johnson With Confidence

Rudi Johnson rushed 13 times for 69 yards on Monday night against the Falcons, showing signs that he is once again ready to rush for over 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns. Johnson has quietly put together one of the most consistent string of productive fantasy football seasons in recent years. He is not an explosive RB, but he runs hard and gets his numbers. Furthermore, he is in one of the leagues most potent offenses and should have plenty of scoring opportunities.

That being said, Rudi Johnson is one of the safest choices you can make in fantasy football. I'm always very reluctant to take chances in the early rounds of the draft. Its too risky and can easily put an early end to your season. If you are drafting in the second half of the 1st round, Rudi is a smart choice and one that will win you fantasy football matchups on a weekly basis.

2007 Fantasy Football Looks and Touches Projections

Matt Buser at writes a great article on the number of looks and touches each player gets during the regular season. Its a great way to help determine the potential value of a fantasy player. "Looks" refer to the number of times a player was targeted with a pass and "touches" refers to the number of times an RB carried or caught a football.

Buser projects the leaders in each fantasy football category for running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. Here are the projected top 5 in each category.

Running Back

  1. LaDainian Tomlinson - 402
  2. Steven Jackson - 399
  3. Larry Johnson - 391
  4. Edgerrin James - 385
  5. Joseph Addai - 382

Wide Receiver

  1. Torry Holt - 173
  2. Donald Driver - 165
  3. Terrell Owens - 156
  4. Andre Johnson - 155
  5. Anquan Boldin - 154

Tight End

  1. Antonio Gates - 126
  2. Todd Heap - 116
  3. Jeremy Shockey - 115
  4. Alge Crumpler - 112
  5. Chris Cooley - 111

For the most part, these projections reflect the overall fantasy football ranked value for each of the players. Some of the exceptions include RB Edgerrin James and in the WR category Andre Johnson and Anquan Boldin. These 3 a great players and could have great years, but they are ranked higher in "looks and touches" projections than they are in points projections.

However, these projections could represent an opportunity for these players to have tier 1 seasons. For example, if Edge is able to increase his yards per carry this year, those 385 touches could translate into 1,500 yards. Arizona has not shown signs of huge improvement in the running game thus far, but that could change as the season goes on.

Andre Johnson and Anquan Boldin also have the talent to have tier 1 seasons. Each Wr should benefit from improved QB play this year in Matt Schaub and a more experienced Matt Leinart.

Buser examines looks and touches weekly and it examining it should be a routine part of your weekly fantasy football research. You may be able to discover a waiver wire player that could turn your season around.

Top 5 Fantasy Football 2 Running Back Systems

Two-back systems have become more of the norm than the exception in the NFL. Some of these systems are so successful that you can't go wrong with either player. Others are not so lucrative. Here are the top 5 two-back systems in the NFL.

  1. Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister
  2. Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew
  3. Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts
  4. Julius Jones and Marion Barber
  5. DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams
A dark horse for 2-back system of the year is Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood. It remains to be seen how much time will be split between these two, but I would predict that both players see plenty of carries.

Final Mock Draft for Rotoworld

Rotoworld posted its final mock draft analysis today with just over a week until kickoff. Their 12 team draft stayed pretty close to the popular draft boards except for a few exceptions.

  • Jones-Drew went #9 overall.....a bit early I think.
  • Rudi Johnson dropped to the 16th overall pick....a steal.
  • Peyton Manning lasted to the end of the second round.
  • Reggie Wayne was the 4th overall WR taken.
  • Brandon Jacobs lasted until round 3.
  • Brees, Bulger, and Brady lasted until round 5.

According to Rotoworld, QB's typically go later in industry league drafts and I would agree. Be careful waiting until round 5 for a QB in your draft.

Joseph Addai Moving up the RB Rankings

In the draft boards that I watch, Joseph Addai has been moving steadily up the charts. I saw him as low as 6th earlier in the preseason. Now he seems to be a consistent #4 pick in the fantasy draft behind either Larry Johnson or Frank Gore.

I think its difficult to go wrong with any of these guys, but Addai will have lots of scoring opportunities in the Colts offense. He clearly plays on the better teams than LF and FG, and he is so far young and injury free.

I think that Joseph Addai is now a legitimate #3 pick in the draft and a safe choice at that spot in the first round.

Overvalued and Undervalued FFL RB's

TJ Thomas of FFtoday published an article this week discussing overvalued and undervalued running backs. They are as follows:

Overvalued:

  1. Larry Johnson
  2. Maurice Jones-Drew
  3. Marshawn Lynch

Undervalued

  1. Travis Henry
  2. Carnell "Cadillac" Williams
  3. Deuce McAllister

I agree with most of these but disagree with a couple. I understand that the Chiefs offensive line is in a state of transision, but I disagree that having Damon Huard at QB will have a huge effect on the running game. Huard led the Chiefs through the first 10 weeks of the season last year before Trent Green returned and did pretty well. Look for a slight decline from LJ, but nothing to panic about.

ESPN's Matthew Berry lists Maurice Jones-Drew as one of the players he loves and says he will have a monster year. I tend to lean more toward's Berry's analysis than Thomas....although I do get skeptical when the hype gets too high on a player. However, Jones-Drew is a huge talent and will have some huge fantasy football games this year.

Finally, Travis Henry has a lot of potential but I would hardly say he is undervalued. I think injuries could be a real concern for Henry this year, and I'm always skeptical of a Denver RB getting the majority of the carries for an entire year.

Westbrook is Good...But How Many Games is he Good For?

Every year I am tempted to draft the electric RB/WR Brian Westbrook, but I am always scared away by his frequent trips to the injury list. Last year, Westbrook played an impressive 15 games and put up great numbers (1217 rush yards, 77 receptions, 11 TDs).

But will he be able to do it for another year? He has had some knee swelling and missed some practice in the preseason, but all signs point to a relatively healthy Westbrook for the season opener.

I've always thought of Westbrook as a big gamble pick, and I don't like to take gambles early in the draft. He's good enough to singlehandedly win games for you, but he can also ruin your season in an instant with an injury.

Depending on your order in the draft, you may not even have to deal with the Westbrook dilemma. But if you do and you decide to pick Westbrook, then make sure to play it safe with your next pick. A team full of risky players could have an early exit in the fantasy football playoffs.

FF 2007 Injury Report - Brandon Jackson

The Green Bay Packers are in trouble at running back. Apparently, RB Brandon Jackson may not be ready for the week 1 opener due to a concussion. Vernand Morency is also nursing a knee injury and may not be fully ready to go.

That leaves Noah Herron and DeShawn Wynn to fill in the current gap.

My advice, take a pass on starting a Green Bay RB in week 1 in their week 1 matchup against Philadelphia.

Watch 2 NFL Games at the Same Time

The NFL Sunday Ticket is a dream for anyone who is a fantasy football addict. You can watch every player you have playing on Sunday and keep track of your home NFL team.

If you have have the Superfan option, then your Sundays just got even better. This year, you will have the ability to stream any NFL game on Sunday live via your computer. You can now watch one game on your main TV and keep track of another fantasy player's game on your computer. It sounds like a great option to me.

Plus, if you are traveling, you don't have to worry about missing any great games because you can bring your laptop with you and access them online.

Fantasy Football Injury Alert - Torry Holt

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Torry Holt is behind schedule in his knee rehab and is reportedly only 70-80% healthy. Holt is quoted as being unsure it will ever completely heal.

I think this clearly moves Holt down a few notches. In fact, he may even be knocked down to the second tier of receivers. Holt has always been a master of the long ball, and if his speed is down, it may be more difficult for him to get open.

When to Draft a Fantasy Football Defense?

Typically there are only 1 or 2 fantasy football defenses that are worth drafting as early as the 5th or 6th rounds. Lately, these spots have been held exclusively by the Baltimore Ravens and the Chicago Bears. Depending on your fantasy scoring system, these teams can often give you a double digit advantage over your opponent, which is a huge difference.

But how early is too early? And what do you do when these 2 teams are gone?

Typically, it becomes very difficult to score one of these two high scoring defenses after the 5th or 6th rounds. Is it worth it to draft these teams that early? Maybe. Part of it depends on the type of team you are trying to put together and what players are left one draft board. If its between the Bears D and your WR2 in round 5, you are probably better off going with the Bears D and waiting a round on your number 2 wide receiver. However, if you are still looking for a starting QB that late, you probably won't want to wait any longer.

After these two defenses are gone, it will be a long time before you will want to consider another D. After the 10th round, you can look at the Chargers and Dolphins defenses. Beyond that, you can feel comfortable waiting until the last or next to last round of your fantasy draft. At that point, there is not much difference between the teams left on the board.

Big Fantasy Football Names - Frank Gore

Frank Gore seems to be inexplicably dropping down fantasy football draft boards right now. And that is a shame and an opportunity for those of you drafting in the first round. Gore has become one of the big fantasy football names at RB. According to Rotoworld.com, Gore's hand is healing and he is craving some action. Missing preseason football games is no big deal for an NFL running back. In fact, it has been used as a strategy to maintain the health and energy of the great LaDainian Tomlinson.

Don't forget so quickly what Frank Gore accomplished last year for the 49ers (5 yards shy of 1700 hards, 9 TDs, 61 receptions). He is in a division that typically does not defend the run well, and plays behind a solid offensive line. Look for Gore to do more of the same this year and draft him with confidence.

2007 Fantasy Football Mock Draft - Analysis

Its getting close to the end of mock draft season. The NFL regular season kicks of a week from Thursday. Many of you have probably already had your big live draft. But for those of you still planning out your draft board, here are a few late preseason observations.

  • Joseph Addai has clearly become a top 5 draft choice. The Colts strong preseason showing last week only solidifies his position even more.
  • Don't wait until round 5 to draft a QB. The risk is too high and you may end up with an inconsistent player at a very important position.
  • Reggie Wayne may be the only elite WR left in the 3rd round.
  • TJ Houshmandzadeh, Marques Colston and Larry Fitzgerald could be great WR2 value picks in the late 3rd and early 4th rounds.
  • If you want the Chicago Defense, you may have to spend a 5th round pick.
Good luck in those fantasy drafts. Practicing in a mock draft ahead of time is a great way to prepare for the real draft.

Brandon Jones Fantasy Football Report

Brandon Jones was considered a fantasy football sleeper at WR for the Titans, but his inconsistent preseason may change his status to deep sleeper.

According to Rotoworld, Jones was targeted just once by Vince Young in the last preseason game and may have possibly lost his starting job. Jones showed flashes of greatness last year, including a 100+ yard 1 TD game against Buffalo at the end of the season.

Jones may turn things around this year, but because of his inconsistency, he is probably not the kind of player that you want in your fantasy lineup every week.

2007 Fantasy Football Injury Report - Kevin Jones, Donald Driver.........

There is a pretty good list of banged up ff league players on the injury list right now, although some of them are not thought to be serious. Here are some updates.

  • Kevin Jones - Likely to miss the first few weeks of the regular season
  • Donald Driver - Will miss preseason finale........Packers are optimistic
  • Michael Turner - LT's backup has the dreaded high ankle sprain.
  • Torry Holt - Swelling in the knee, may not be 100% for week 1.
  • Tatum Bell - Minor shin injury
  • Clinton Portis - Knee tendinitis....not cutting in practice but says he'll be there week 1.

Fantasy Football Rankings and Strategy - A Different Take

Every year I try to prepare a new fantasy football draft strategy that is tailored for the unique circumstances that come with each new season. But I always try to keep a few fundamental rules at the forefront of my draft strategy. One of those rules is to remember that fantasy games are won by winning your weekly matchup with another opponent.......not by scoring the most points in a season. This is an important distinction to make, and one that should affect your draft strategy. It is also an essential point that many fantasy football experts fail to recognize or emphasize. I've seen many teams outscore the league by dozens of points but still fail to place in the top 3.

That being said, I try to design my fantasy football team in such a way that gives me an advantage over my opponents at every position on my team. I look at my entire fantasy lineup across the board and try to put together a team that has a top 5 player at every position.........even TE, kicker and defense. I know that the common rule is to draft kickers and defenses late........and I agree to an extent. (I've heard the Robbie Gould argument many times this year). However, drafting a perennial kicker/defense/tight end scorer earlier than your peers gives you an opportunity to develop an advantage at those positions. It doesn't matter if there is still a WR on the board that would outscore that kicker.....it only matters that you have a weekly advantage at every position.

That's why I typically try to draft a WR in the second round. There are only a few WR in the league that are guaranteed to produce every season. Getting a Marvin Harrison or a Torry Holt in round 2 gives you a clear advantage at that position over every team in the league. And you can still pick up a RB in the third round that is comparable to almost any RB drafted middle to late in the second round.

Keep this fundamental rule in mind as you draft. I believe it is critical to producing a winning fantasy football team every season.

2007 Fantasy Football Defense Rankings

Looking for the best fantasy football defense to draft for you team? Check out this free fantasy football defense report and adjust your draft sheet accordingly.

Rank Team
1 Ravens - Lost Adalius Thomas, but they are still the best in the NFL.
2 Bears - May lean more towards 2-deep zone, which could affect turnovers.
3 Patriots - The Raven's loss is the Patriot's gain......Thomas should improve the D.
4 Chargers - Led league in sacks last year.....but lost a lot of coaching.
5 Jaguars - Should be healthier and stingier this year.
6 Broncos - Addition of Dre Bly should help.
7 Dolphins - Will Joey Porter make a difference........the verdict is out.
8 Vikings - Great at stopping the run.
9 Eagles - If Kearse returns to health, this D will be solid.
10 Panthers - A new DB's coach could improve the Panthers secondary.

Move Andre Johnson up Your Fantasy Football Draft Board

Andre Johnson quietly racked up over a 100 receptions last year for the Houston Texans with David Carr at QB. This year, the Texans upgraded their QB position with Matt Schaub, former backup to Michael Vick. Schaub should provide more consistency than Carr at the QB position, which should translate into a huge fantasy football season for WR Andre Johnson.

Schaub has looked sharp in the preasons completing 12 of 16 passes for 109 yards against the Dallas Cowboys in his 3rd preseason game.

Saturday, August 25, 2007

Brandon Jacobs - A Third Round Steal?

Brandon Jacobs is scheduled to receive 20 to 25 carries a game this year for the New York Giants. At 265 pounds and 4.4 speed, Jacobs has the talent to become an elite fantasy football stud running back this year. The Giants have always produced good rushing yardage with Tiki Barber carrying the ball. If the O-line continues to open holes, Jacobs could produce Larry Johnson type numbers with his skill set.

Jacobs is a legitimate second round pick in your fantasy football draft. If you see him hanging there in the third, consider him a steal.

Travis Henry Expected to Be Healthy Week 1

Those of you itching to draft Travis Henry and watch what he does with the Denver O-line can breath a sigh of relief. Henry sprained a knee in last week in a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, but expected to be ready in time to start in your fantasy football lineup in week 1.

Henry has been steadily moving up many fantasy draft boards and is a legitimate late 1st round pick at running back. Denver has not had a one-back system for years and has always been frustrating for fantasy owners. Although the O-line is dominant, Denver has been known to switch running backs from week to week.

Coach Mike Shanahan has been hinting that Travis Henry will receive the majority of carries at RB this year. If that is true, then look for Henry to improve greatly upon the solid fantasy football season he had last year for the Titans.

Friday, August 24, 2007

FF Sleeper - Wes Welker

New England Patriots WR Wes Welker has a great opportunity to accomplish what Brandon Stokely did for the Indianapolis Colts 2 years ago as a WR3............1000 yards receiving. The speedy Welker had a great breakout season last year with the Dolphins catching 67 footballs for 687 yards and a touchdown.

This year he will have the field wide open with Randy Moss and Donte Stallworth covering the ends. Look for Welker to open up frequently in the middle. Welker may not be an every week fantasy football starter, but he is a great player to have on the bench and may prove to be a consistent weekly threat with Tom Brady throwing to him.

FF Today Risky Running Backs

FF Today has updated a great running back rankings page that denotes RB's who pose a potential fantasy football risk. The list is as follows:
  1. Larry Johnson
  2. Clinton Portis
  3. Warrick Dunn
  4. Kevin Jones
I think it is safe to assume that LJ will eventually be removed from this list because he has signed a long term deal with the KC Chiefs had has reported to camp.

I agree that Portis, Dunn, and Jones are risks due to injuries. This also makes their backups potentially very valuable..........although still risky.

Portis is expected to share more carries this year with Ladell Betts and Warrick Dunn will continue to lose ground to the explosive Jerious Norwood.

Kevin Jones is sharing a backfield with ex-Broncos speedster Tatum Bell and the big back T.J. Duckett.

If I were to bet on a backup with the highest upside, I would look at Falcons RB Jerious Norwood.....although the absence of Michael Vick may have a huge overall effect on the Falcons offense.

Ladell Betts had a good season last year and is probably the surest bet out of these backups.

Preseason Injury Report: Donald Driver Injures Foot

Last nights preseason games included one potentially significant injury, as the Green Bay Packers WR Donald Driver was carted off the field before half time with a foot injury. There is no word yet on the severity of the injury.

Driver is coming off a great year last year with 92 catches for 1,295 yards and 8 touchdowns. This injury warrants some caution before drafting him high until more is known about the injury.

Mock Fantasy Draft Results - 5 Thoughts

I know I've been writing a lot about mock draft fantasy results, but this time of the season its a great way to practice and prepare yourself for your upcoming live draft. Here are a few thoughts based upon some of the mock fantasy draft results that I have seen.

  1. Great Wide Receivers are still available in the third round.
  2. Running Backs once again seem to be dominating the first 20 picks.
  3. If you want an elite quarterback, don't wait until the 5th round.....its too risky.
  4. Randy Moss will most likely be a great 5th round value pick.........possibly worth the risk.
  5. Peyton Manning may be available in the second round.....a super value.

Top Tier Fantasy Football WR

This year the top tier of fantasy football receivers looks a bit more crowded. In years past you could isolate it to 2 or 3 sure things wide receivers. This year, some are arguing for 5 or 6 top tier fantasy wide receivers.

Here are the candidates:

  1. Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers
  2. Marvin Harrison, Indianapolis Colts
  3. Torry Holt, St. Louis Rams
  4. Chad Johnson, Cincinnati Bengals
  5. Terrell Owens, Dallas Cowboys
  6. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts
The one thing this group has in common is that they have consistently produced great statistics every year for multiple years. And yes, Reggie Wayne meets that criteria even though he is a #2 receiver for the Colts.

In the early rounds of your fantasy football draft, it is always better to go with a sure thing. Save the risk taking for the later rounds. Drafting a top tier wide receiver in the first or second rounds gives you a solid advantage at that position and great fantasy scoring that you can rely on all year long.

Is Daunte Culpepper a Good Fantasy Football Draft Pick?

With the Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell still unsigned, it is pretty certain that Daunte Culpepper will be the starting quarterback this year...probably for most of the season. We all know that Culpepper was once rated right next to Peyton Manning for fantasy football starting quarterbacks. But last year he struggled with the Miami Dolphins, partly due to a lack of mobility. Culpepper clearly had not fully recovered from his knee injury.

This year marks another fresh start for Culpepper. However, it most likely won't result in better statistics for Culpepper. Oakland's offensive line is a mess, and they lost talent when Randy Moss was traded to the New England Patriots. Keep Culpepper in mind as a deep sleeper, but don't expect much out of him in Oakland. The team is simply not good enough to perform.

Chris Brown to Start at RB for the Tennessee Titans?

Rotoworld is reporting that Chris Brown is likely to be named the starting running back for the Tennessee Titans.

Chris Brown had respectable fantasy football numbers a couple of years ago for the Titans. If he does start, he could be a great player to have deep on your bench. However, those of you planning on drafting LenDale White may want to show some caution.

If Chris Brown is still around in the late rounds of your fantasy football draft, don't feel bad taking a chance on him.

Top 5 Running Backs I'm Afraid to Pick

I am a fantasy player who likes to avoid risk. Especially in the early rounds. This year there are a lot of fantasy football running backs who are either unproven or are playing for a new team. Some of these player will have great seasons, but others will be busts. Here are the top 5 running backs that I'm afraid to pick in my 2007 fantasy football draft.

  1. Jamal Lewis, Cle, RB
  2. Thomas Jones, NYJ, RB
  3. Brandon Jacobs, NYG RB
  4. Willis McGahee, Bal, RB
  5. Ahman Green, Hou, RB

5 Keys to Winning Your Fantasy Football League

What is the key to winning your fantasy football league? Here are 5 keys that have served me well through the years.

  1. Luck - There is no way around this one. You can be the most well-researched, savvy, hard-working fantasy football player in the world.........but if your first 2 picks go down for the season in week 1, you probably won't win your fantasy football league.
  2. Know your players - If you don't know who is out there, you'll have no chance of filling your team with the best possible fantasy football players. Read as many articles as you can and scan the player rankings on Yahoo. Get to know a players stats.
  3. Know your key players backups - Handcuffing your most important players with their backups on your bench can literally save your fantasy football season. I learned this a few years back when I kept Larry Johnson on my bench all season to go with a 1st round pick of Priest Holmes. LJ filled right in and kept me going.
  4. Be quick on the Waiver Wire - Hesitating to pick up a good player on the waiver wire is your loss and someone else's gain. Go with your instincts......some of the top ranked players each year in fantasy football come from the waiver wire.
  5. Don't get too cute with your lineup - You drafted great players in the first 3 rounds........be sure to use them. Trying to guess which bench player will have the better week based on matchups can frequently blow up in your face. Don't try to get too fancy. Just because Carnell Williams is facing the Colts defense, doesn't mean that you should sit LT that week.

Fantasy Football Leagues that are Free

If you are new to fantasy football and you haven't joined a league yet, here is a useful list of the best fantasy football leagues that are free.

  1. ESPN Fantasy Football
  2. Fox Fantasy Football
  3. NFL.com Fantasy Football
  4. AOL Sports Fantasy Football
These are some of the big names. I'm partial to Yahoo Fantasy Football because I've been using it for years. The only tool I purchase is the $9.99 Stattracker which gives you live updates of your fantasy match as the games play.

If you have a favorite that isn't on this list. Leave a comment.....give a shout out.

LJ Signs - Fantasy Football Players Sigh in Relief

Larry Johnson, super-stud running back for the Kansas City Chiefs, signed a 5 year extension for 45 million dollars according to Espn fantasy football.

This ends a 25-day holdout and puts one of fantasy's greatest scorers back on the field. For those of you with high picks who were hesitant to draft Larry Johnson........draft away. Expect at least 1,500 yards if LJ has a down year.

Should you draft Carson Palmer in the 2nd round?

After Peyton Manning, the QB position in fantasy football becomes slightly less clear. It looks like Carson Palmer is poised to take over the #2 spot this year now that he has had plenty of time to recover from a knee injury.

ESPN fantasy football projects Palmer at around 4000 yards and 30 touchdowns.

These are great numbers, but when you can get a Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Donovan McNabb, or Marc Bulger a round or 2 later, is Palmer worthy of a projected round 2 choice.

I would argue that you are better off waiting on QB until the 4th round. Spend your 2nd and 3rd round choices on a more rare commodity like a #2 RB or a #1 WR. You'll get more value out of your picks without loosing much at the QB spot. Remember, its a fantasy football team. You need all of your players to do well.

Fantasy Football Draft Strategy By Position - 1st Pick

Each position in a fantasy football draft requires a tailored strategy in order to maximize the most value out of the draft position. This series will take a look at each pick in the draft and suggest a pick strategy to follow. First up......the first pick. Here is a suggested board.

  1. Running Back
  2. Wide Receiver
  3. Running Back
  4. Quarterback
  5. Tight End
  6. Wide Receiver
  7. Running Back
  8. Running Back
  9. Wide Receiver
  10. Wide Receiver

Obviously a running back is going to be the first pick in the draft (LaDainian Tomlinson) nearly every year. The second pick in this position can be used on an elite WR like a Torry Holt or possibly a Marvin Harrison. By waiting until the 3rd round to pick your second RB, you get a receiver upgrade without losing much talent at that second RB position. You can still get an elite quarterback in the 4th round like a Mark Bulger or Drew Brees and then get an early jump on a consistent tight end like Cooley. Most of the mid-round WR's have very similar stats so you can get a respectable guy in the 6th round. After that, go fishing for running backs. Try to find a gem that could pay off big later in the season. The Green Bay Packers Brandon Jackson may fit in that category. Late rounds are all about finding hidden talent, and a good late round draft can sometimes win you a fantasy football trophy.

Will Cadillac Williams Return to Rookie Form?

Ken Daube at ESPN fantasy football is predicting that Cadillac Williams has a good chance of returning to his rookie form. Here are his predictions:

300 carries, 1,140 yards rushing, six touchdowns, 25 catches and 145 yards receiving

He argues that RB's usually see a decline in yards per carry in their second year, and then bounce back in their third year. He also thinks that Jeff Garcia will significantly improve the QB play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I think that Daube makes a solid case, however, I'm not usually one to take fantasy football risks by a players potential to improve. I wouldn't take Cadillac before the 5th round, but most likely he'll be gone by then. I would rather spend my hard earned early round picks on proven players and then take chances later in the draft.

Espn currently has Carnell Williams ranked as the 29th overall pick in the fantasy football draft and the 21st RB.

Frank Gore is Practicing and Will be Ready for Week 1

Rotoworld is reporting that San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is participating in individual practice drills and is scheduled to be ready for a week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

This is reassuring news for all of you Frank Gore lovers (I am one of them). Gore should be ready to continue running all over the Arizona Cardinals in week one. After his stunning statistical performance in the NFL last year, Frank Gore has shot up fantasy football draft boards this year and is consistently ranked in the top 5.

Trent Green Will Start at QB for the Dolphins

No surprise here. Trent Green has officially been named the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. Trent is not the fantasy football force that he used to be, but he is solid.

Look for a consistent Trent Green to help elevate the numbers of WR Chris Chambers, who had a down year last year with Daunte Culpepper and Joey Harrington splitting QB duties.

Best Way to Conduct a Live Draft?

How do you conduct your live draft? Are you new-school, using a fancy draft tool on ESPN fantasy football or Yahoo fantasy football? Or do you kick it old-school and use a magnetic fantasy football draft board. Do you keep track of your draft online, or do you write the picks in by hand or use a fantasy football draft spreadsheet?

I find that the best drafts are conducted live with paper notes in hand around a big table. The online tools are fantastic, but they do take some of the fun and character out of the event. My opinion, make an effort to get your league together in person at least once a year for the draft and save the computers for the season. It makes for a better league and an all-around better experience.

Laurence Maroney is Ready to Rumble

It looks like Laurence Maroney is ready for contact. The Boston Globe is reporting that Maroney is no longer wearing his no-contact jersey and is ready to take some hits. If he can stay healthy, look for Maroney to build upon his solid rookie season for the New England Patriots and put up some big fantasy football points.

A fantasy football mock draft can be a great way to prepare for your upcoming draft. It exposes you to a wide range of draft possibilities, and can help prepare you for dealing with unexpected results in your own draft. This type of experience can be invaluable.

Check out a few results from some fantasy football mock drafts conducted from the #2 spot in a 10 person league. Each section shows 1 separately drafted team.

Running Back Sleeper Alert - Brandon Jackson

It looks as though 2nd round pick Brandon Jackson will be the week 1 starter at RB for the Green Bay Packers. Vetran RB Vernand Morency is still sidelined with a knee injury.

The Packers offense can still be explosive and a energetic young rookie like Jackson could make some fantasy noise. Keep him in mind when you are looking for a running back in the 8th or 9th round.

Maurice Jones-Drew - Saved by the Pass?

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew caught a noteworthy 2 passes for 47 yards in the Jags preseason game against Tampa Bay. Granted, one of the large pass plays was on a missed tackle, but that is fairly commonplace with Jones-Drew's elusiveness.

If you are in a league that counts receptions for RB's, then Jones-Drew could provide some scoring power with his receptions, even if he does lose touches to Fred Taylor in the running game. I hesitate to put him in the second round, but feel free to pull the trigger on him in the third round of your draft.

Fantasy Football Breakout - Adrian Peterson

Rookie Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has looked explosive thus far in the preseason. Last week against the New York Jets, Peterson ran for 70 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries. Its dangerous to put too much weight on the preseason, but sometimes these games can be a sign of things to come.

If Peterson can stay healthy in the NFL, he has the tools to be a fantasy football stud. Don't get excited and draft Peterson too early, but I'd feel pretty good if I had him sitting on my bench.
